New students at High Technology High School are immediately immersed in the vast world of engineering. With such a rigorous and fruitful curriculum, Project Lead The Way provides a myriad of insightful lessons that include CAD modeling, sketch designs, and proper engineering notation. Just channel your inner genius.

With the help of the teacher, students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. It all starts out with simple drawings, which then culminates into 3-D modeling on the Autodesk Inventor Professional software. Projects include the complete replication of a model car with the Autodesk software, in addition to a multitude of different CAD drawings that further aggrandize the aptitude of each student with this complicated software.

The Introduction to Engineering course is held in a room, with high-end equipment and technology, which facilitates the learning experience for all students.

In this course, students are able to simultaneously learn about the engineering design process and physically apply what they've learned so far. CIM focuses on the ethics and strategies of manufacturing, as well as the assembly and programming of Fischertechnik parts to create practical contraptions. CIM is a great introduction into the world of automted manufacturing, as it reminds students of the importance and efficiency of automation in the world.

Topics such as Six Sigma, rapid prototyping, and 3D prototyping were all discssed. In addition to these skills, teamwork exercises were given to groups of students to ensure that engineers graduating from High Tech could work well, not only individually, but also in a team. The combination of team and individual projects introduced by Mr. Robert Dennis allows the students to learn to function with other people and as individual engineers, giving each student an extensive knowledge of the topics covered. A quick synopsis of the topics covered is listed: Kaisen theory, lean manufacturing, the history of manufacturing, the assembly line, rapid prototyping techniques, and Computer Numerical Control programming are just a few of the expansive curriculum.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing exposes students to milling machines, programmed robot arms, and the best 3D modeling software on the market.

With Freshman year completed, High Tech students move on through their education in engineering to Principles of Engineering Design. The class teaches students about simple machines, the mathematics behind simple engineering concepts (like stress, simple machines, etc.). The students also learn about engineering ethics and recycling, concepts important to grasp so that in their careers, they can be not only efficient and successful but responsible engineers.

he second half of the year is mainly spent on using VEX robotics and learning the programming language RobotC. These skills are mastered as different sensors, motors, and equipment are handled, programmed, and applied to complete tasks. In addition, team projects help reestablish the theme that teamwork is an essential skill for an engineer.

Principles of Engineering houses numerous computers, which contain bridge-modeling software as well as material testing.

During sophomore year, all High Tech students take Computer Programming for Engineers, commonly known as COPE. The course, which is taught by Mr. Borchardt, is a rigorous introduction to programming in Java. Students begin by learning about basic concepts such as primitive data types and eventually progress to more advanced concepts such as algorithm analysis and recursion. Emphasis is placed on constant practice with programming projects, assignments, and assessments. By the end of the course, students are well-prepared to take the AP Computer Science A exam.

Students are required to work together as a team in order to develop practical software, using Apple computers.

Using Python® as a primary tool and incorporating multiple platforms and languages for computation, this course aims to develop computational thinking, generate excitement about career paths that utilize computing, and introduce professional tools that foster creativity and collaboration.

While this course can be a student's first in computer science, students without prior computing experience are encouraged to start with Introduction to Computer Science. CSP helps students develop programming expertise and explore the workings of the Internet. Projects and problems include app development, visualization of data, cybersecurity, and simulation. The course curriculum is a College Board-approved implementation of AP CS Principles.

Students take a step forward in their engineering careers, using programs on Python and web development.

Students start out learning about architecture and the principles of design by researching famous structures, architects, and building styles. They later draw floor plans, build models, and learn to use Autodesk Revit. As the course progresses, the focus shifts more towards civil engineering, and students learn the math and science behind getting their creations to stand, applying building codes and other environmental constraints to their designs.

In addition to PLTW projects, including designing a fully functional Habitat for Humanities home (with electricity, plumbing, wastewater management, etc), constructing a scaled model of a wall section, and building roof systems on tissue boxes, the CEA class does work with Lego Architecture.

In order to construct architectural models, the right materials are required to do so. In this facility, all the equipment is provided to make the most professional structures.

For the final year of the Project Lead the Way track, students take Engineering Design and Development. This class features a senior design project in which students can either invent or build upon a technological device of their choosing. Students work on their device from the beginning of a semester to the end.

They are heavily involved with the design, planning, building, and documentation of the product. If merited by the design, the students can also work with a patent lawyer to patent the device. The instructor, Dr. Raymond Eng, guides the students as a mentor. Students must present multimedia progress reports, submit interim and final written reports, and present their fully-functioning inventions and projects to a panel of outside reviewers and professionals at the conclusion of the course.

In EDD, students make the best use of common household objects in order to develop innovative gadgets that can assist the average person in a variety of different tasks.

One aspect of academics High Tech strongly supports and urges upon its students is research. Throughout Senior year, Introduction to Research gives students the opportunity to decide what research project they would like to conduct, and to create a professional experiment briefing. Although the class doesn't include any actual testing, the undeniably important "pre-experiment" phase is deeply explored throughout the class. The class is taught by Mr. Roche, who is assisted by a variety of teachers, including Mrs. Macneil, Ms. Babbin, and Ms. Pannapara.

As future engineers, it is doubtful that many students will never encounter such another project in their career, and High Tech allows the students to get a head start on mastering the skill. Some examples of topics explored in these project proposals include: Music Science, mathematics, acoustics, biology/herbology, sports science, oneirology (Sleep Science), and the science of human patterns and tendencies.
